Finding the right location
One question owners of new businesses ask me is where I think a good place to open their med spa or laser business. Nearly everyone I speak with is considering Scottsdale, AZ as a great place to set up a business. The main reason is probably obvious – Scottsdale is known to be home to individuals and families with a higher than average annual income. And though income is definitely a demographic consideration for when you have a business, it’s not the only consideration. Though it takes a bit of time to research where your business may thrive, I have a few simple suggestions to get you pointed in the right direction.

Choose a location convenient to you - You want (or will eventually want) a location that is convenient to you. Driving upward of 30 minutes to get to your spa can get old really fast. Especially when you are starting out and don’t have many clients, it can be a real chore to commute – what if you only have one client or have a big break between clients? Choosing a location that is close to home can be one choice that can make your life easier. If you already have clients and are thinking of changing locations, consider also how far they will travel to see you (hopefully on a regular basis.) But if you eventually want to move to a new area, definitely consider where you want to end up – it’s often wise to plan with the end in mind, so your desired area is definitely worth considering.
Plan to be in that area for a long time (if possible) - A new location can be exciting! I love redecorating and reimagining the feel of a room. But when you choose your first location or move locations, keep in mind you are going to want to be in the same location/neighborhood/general area for a long time. Once you have a clientele established, you know your location is convenient enough for them to keep coming back. It’s a hassle for clients to go to a different city – and you want to make coming to see you to be as easy as possible. While moving locations within a general area is generally not a big deal, having your clients drive all the way to Gilbert, AZ when they are used to seeing you in Phoenix, AZ can result in loss of some of those clients. Yes, if they love you, they will follow you wherever you go! Yes, they will appreciate the shiny new space! But keep in mind, you also want them to refer their friends (who may live in the same area as they do – frequenting the same gym, church, events, etc.)
Don’t try to go too big too fast - When selecting a location and work space, it is really tempting to get a nice, big space that has that “wow factor.” You know, the sleek floors, the exquisite decorations, the location next to the upscale areas of town. Some may argue that a client experience and perception of the luxury of their surroundings influences their perceived worth of the service – “it’s all about packaging” says my sister, a graphic designer – and while this is true, it has to be done in a smart way. I have seen so many businesses close down after the first year or two because the rent on their high-end space eats up their profits every month. Be mindful of the expense of your location and build it into your budget. My advice: Start small and build up to the space of your dreams.
